A Week in Nicaragua

Thursday 28 December 2017

If you enjoy the best of both worlds, and by that I mean are a fan of both natural landscapes and cities with old charm, then Nicaragua could be spot on for you as it meets these two needs perfectly. Our local guide told us that Nicaragua was perhaps one of the most beautiful countries in Central America and after spending a week cramming in the sites, I would probably have to agree with him.

Nicaragua is home to some of the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen, with imposing volcanoes, glorious beaches and alluring colonial cities. Within close reach of the border from Costa Rica is the Lago Cocibolca, which is home to the island of Ometepe. The island is composed of two volcanoes that literally emerge from this great lake. The larger side of the island is dominated by the active volcano Concepcion (pictured above) and the other side is dominated by the extinct volcano Maderas.

I climbed Concepcion which was challenging but a really incredible thing to have done. The first 3 hours of the climb takes you through cloud forest full of howler monkeys and small plantation farms. Then you will reach a point where the vegetation stops and volcanic rubble is all that remains on the surface. The views from the stop are exceptional and were completely worth the terrible sunburn and bruises I picked up as a result of countless slips due to inappropriate footwear...

Our next destination was Granada, a beautiful colonial city with plenty of old charm and culture. The best way to see the city is to read up on its history and go for a wander. Definitely pay to go up the Iglesia de la Mercad for the best view of the city!

Granada is also surrounded by volcanic splendour, with the beautiful crater lake Laguna de Apoyo and the bubbling Masaya Volcano both a short drive away. If you visit or stay at the Laguna Beach Club, you will get the opportunity to paddle board on the impressive crater lake, which was definitely a highlight as it was so peaceful and exceptionally beautiful.

There is so much more to see in Nicaragua including beaches for surfing as well as more colonial towns and cities. This post just gives you a small taste of what you can find in this beautiful country!
