Rajasthan: Two Week Itinerary

Monday 2 October 2017

This February, I finally embarked on my dream trip to Northern India. After visiting Kerala back in 2015, I was well and truly obsessed with the idea of returning to India and exploring more of the country I had fallen for 8 years ago. Although I would have loved to have spent months in India, I had a small budget and short time frame forcing me to completely plan out the perfect itinerary prior to arriving.

It turns out my itinerary worked out pretty well and even though I was only in India for two weeks, I can honestly say it felt like a month due to the amount that I did and saw. So I thought I would share with you a suggested two week Itinerary for Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle, to help you get the most out of your two weeks in this region.

Days 1 & 2: Delhi
Whether you love it or loathe it, you simply cannot fly into New Delhi without staying a night or two in order to really get a feel for this growing metropolis. Even though at times I disliked being in Delhi, mostly due to the relentless air fumes and ceaseless traffic. It actually became a city I grew fascinated by and I honestly think it has some of the best landmarks of any capital city I have been to.

Our flight arrived mid-morning and so we forced ourselves out of our hostel to go and explore and beat the jet lag. My favourite sites in the city were Humayan's Tomb and the Lodhi Gardens, but I have a whole other blog post on things to do in Delhi, which you can check out here.

Day 3: Agra
Wake up in Delhi and head for the Gatiman Express train to Agra. This is a really modern train and can get you to Agra in about 3-4 hours. You must book beforehand and this was pretty easy as our hostel owners were more than happy to book the trains for us!

Once you arrive and settle into your hotel in Agra, get a taxi or rickshaw to take you to the Agra Fort. This is really impressive and has prominent links to the Taj Mahal. On your way back, head to the Mehtab Bagh for your first glimpse of the Taj Mahal from a 16th century park.

Days 4 & 5: Ranthambore National Park
Wake up as early as you can and head straight for the Taj Mahal, making sure you have bought tickets in a nearby ticket office before getting to the gate. You cannot take in large bags so make sure to leave backpacks at the hotel. Enjoy the sunrise over the impressive monument before heading back to your hotel to prepare for your next destination.

You can either get a taxi straight from Agra to Ranthambore or you can get a Taxi to Bharatpur Station and catch a train from there to Sawai Madhopur (the closest station to the park). If you arrive in the evening you probably won't have time for a Safari, but book yourself onto two for the next day in order to try and spot a tiger! Read more about Ranthambore here.

Days 6 - 8: Udaipur
I believe there is a train from Sawai Madhopur to Udaipur, but it is very long and runs through the night so we decided to opt for a private transfer. Try to leave as early as you can because the journey takes 7-8 hours. Once you arrive in Udaipur, the journey will be long forgotten as you settle into stunning lake views, a cup of chai and start to unwind in this magical city.

Spend the next two days relaxing and enjoying the opulence and serenity of Udaipur. If you want to know what to do there, I have a blogpost all about it.

Days 9 & 10: Jodhpur
You cannot get a train between Jodphur and Udaipur so you have to get a private transfer. There are plenty of tour companies who can arrange this in Udaipur, or simply ask your hotel for advice. Leave as early in the day as you can, in order to arrive in Jodhpur just in time to watch the sun set from a roof terrace overlooking the impressive fort and blue washed walls.

The following day you must head to the Mehrangah Fort in the morning and visit the locals market/clock tower in the afternoon. To find out more about Jodphur, check out this blogpost.

Days 11 - 13: Jaipur
Wake up in Jodhpur and then head to the train station to hop onto a pre-booked train to Jaipur. This is the capital of Rajasthan and part of the Golden Triangle, so its much bigger and busier than the previous cities.

Spend the next 3 days exploring Jaipur. This blogpost has a few tips and recommendations on things to do in the city!

Day 14: Delhi
Leave Jaipur via train or car and head back to India's capital for one more night before heading home or elsewhere.
